Questions on thriller films

1) What is the purpose of the opening to a film? To attract the audience and give an insight of the film. To give clues as to what will be happening in the film and what the film is about, also include some of the actors and introduce the characters in it.

2) What techniques can a director use to create suspense in a film? The director can create a sense of mystery and keep the audience guessing what’s about to happen. They can provide a lot of different camera angles to keep mystery and how they portray the characters can create a sense of mystery.

3) How do you think a thriller film is defined? A thriller film is closely related to horror, thriller films provide suspense and thrills with a sense of mystery to the audience.

4) What films can you think of that would fit into the thriller genre? Inception, One hour photo, Se7en, Black swan, Psycho, Salt.

5) The thriller film can be divided into sub – genres – what different types of thriller films do you think exist? Psycho thriller, action thriller, conspiracy thriller, crime thriller, disaster thriller, mystery thriller and supernatural thriller

6) What are the characteristic or conventions of a thriller film? Darkness, mysterious characters, evil characters, characters that are victims, characters that are either married or going out with someone, usually some sort of narrator, or the character explain the storyline within their acting.

7) What do you think is the audience pleasure to a thriller film? Audience pleasure could be the storyline, because storylines in thriller films tend to be very intense and interesting, unlike thrillers it doesn’t scare you so you can continue to watch. The pleasure to a thriller film could be the sense of mystery it gives off, and having to work out and unravel a complicated plot.

8) What do you think are the difference between a horror and thriller film? Horror is scarier, whereas thriller films are more interesting and show mystery and thrills you, with excitement rather than actually scare and shock you.

9) Using the internet research the top 50 thriller films. Look at the top twenty – if it’s not many why do you think this is the case? From the top 20 I haven’t watched many at all. Only about 1 or 2. I think this is because I don’t watch that many films in general. I like thriller films but I tend not to watch them that much because my family don’t really watch them and prefer other genres.
